In the Manner Of
A school design inspired by Sir Kamil Khan Mumtaz, blending traditional elements, Islamic geometry, and climate-responsive zoning to create functional, culturally rooted, and student-centered spaces.

The project aimed to explore and study the design philosophy and work ethic of a chosen architect, Sir Kamil Khan Mumtaz, mirroring his approach in the design of a school. His journey from a modernist to a traditional architect served as a wellspring of inspiration. In addition to the prominent use of traditional elements like red brick masonry, arches, muqarnas, double heighted verandas, jharokas, use of Islamic geometry and proportions, Sir Kamil also focuses on curation of three types of zones - the open, semi open and private spaces. These zones not only cater to the functional requirements but also embrace environmental considerations, with the open zones reducing the temperature, the semi-open zones facilitating the ventilation and the private zones housing the functions in which both served, and servant spaces are included.

The project revolves around the students, since they are the primary users of the space, and their spatial and behavioral needs take priority. While employing the traditional elements inspired from Sir Kamil Khan’s work, the zones were meticulously crafted around student routines, showing a sensitivity to requirements of privacy, interaction, and education. The first zone is a public space where a student finds little to no privacy, it is centered around functions like administration, waiting and staffroom etc. The second zone, semi-private in nature, features the study areas and serves as a common zone for the interaction between teachers and students. It also incorporates jharokas, in Sir Kamil’s exclusive style, that overlook the social space. The third zone features a sunken library along with common rooms for students that open to a courtyard. This serves as a private zone for the students where they can relax in their leisure time. All the zones are interconnected via arcaded verandas. Inspired by Sir Kamil Khan Mumtaz’s journey, the project mirrors a student's progression through a learning environment.
