A Cyclic Parasite
An artistic pavilion concept exploring time, change, and the interplay between built form and nature, symbolizing an ongoing cycle of growth, decay, and renewal.

The project aims to design a pavilion with NUST Lake (Islamabad) being its proposed site. The design would be an artistic, sculptural piece meant to reflect an idea, a piece of storytelling. The concept revolves around the revolution of architecture over time, the effects of natural conditions on built structures, and the usage of time as a design tool. Parasitism was used as a design strategy to achieve this idea. Parasites act by consuming the essence of the host, both metaphorically in terms of its identity and physically by taking in resources from the host. In this project, the form itself acts as the parasite, growing over and into the lake and glorifying its identity.

However, this is not the only element at play here, as, with time, nature can to tear away the identity of a structure, slowly reclaiming it for itself. Eventually, every being in existence will be consumed by nature and forgotten or integrated into nature itself and grow alongside it. An inspiring depiction of this concept is found in the award-winning piece of fiction, “Nier: Automata.” This situation will place two different thematic parasites in the same space, creating a struggle for identity between the foreign and man-made built forms and the natural factor represented by the lake and the moss, resulting in a cyclical process of change that is proposed to reset every few decades via conservation works, and, hence shapes the concept for this project: “A CYCLICAL PARASITE.”
