Inclutable
Inclutable is an interactive, inclusive classroom desk that supports autistic and neurotypical children with task management, collaboration, and real-time progress tracking.

Inclusive education aims to support the social, emotional, and cognitive growth of all students, yet autistic children in Pakistan’s mainstream classrooms face persistent barriers. Limited awareness and understanding among educators, caregivers, and peers often lead to social exclusion, missed opportunities, and stigmatization. Research highlights the “Double Empathy Problem,” where communication gaps between neurodivergent and neurotypical individuals hinder collaboration. Peer-mediated interventions, inclusive seating, and play-based strategies show promise but are rarely applied consistently in local classrooms. Observations in schools revealed challenges such as non-inclusive desk arrangements, sensory sensitivities, impulsive speech delays, and limited peer engagement. Lack of structured collaborative play and insufficient teacher training further restrict inclusion. These barriers impact on autistic children’s participation, social development, and academic progress. The research identified the desk as the primary workspace and the key intervention point, since it is where children spend most of their time and where peer interactions can naturally occur. Addressing this touchpoint offered the greatest potential to foster independence, interaction, and equity.

The project culminated in Inclutable, an inclusive classroom desk designed to bridge gaps between autistic and neurotypical students. The trapezium shape allows flexible seating configurations such as clustered, semi-circular, or paired that encourages peer collaboration, social interaction, and teacher engagement. Ergonomic details include adjustable height, rounded edges for safety, a slight tabletop tilt for posture, and adequate legroom for sensory comfort. Task management is supported through a block-based activity system: children’s complete tasks by placing color-coded geometric blocks into corresponding slots, reinforcing shape recognition, fine motor skills, and cognitive development. Integrated LED lights provide gentle visual feedback such as green for completed tasks and red when help is needed, offering non-verbal cues for teachers and peers. A whiteboard surface encourages visual thinking and expression, while a modular connection system allows desks to link for group work. Under-desk organizers and pen slots reduce clutter and distractions, ensuring a tidy workspace. This blend of tactile, visual, and spatial features supports independence, focus, creativity, and meaningful collaboration in daily learning activities.

Inclutable integrates with a companion app for real-time monitoring and performance tracking. Students sign in with NFC cards; teachers assign tasks, set timers, and receive alerts if assistance is required. Data syncs automatically, enabling progress reviews over time and helping educators make informed decisions. The desk’s electronic microcontroller, reed switches, LED lights, and NFC reader are modular for easy maintenance and future upgrades. Polypropylene was selected for the desk body due to its durability, light weight, moisture resistance, and safety when injection-molded with rounded edges. Laser-cut acrylic is used for the tactile task blocks, and the overall design ensures child safety, ergonomic comfort, and adaptability in diverse classroom settings. By merging ergonomic form, sensory-friendly materials, interactive elements, and smart technology, Inclutable transforms the desk into a powerful tool for inclusion rather than just a surface for work. It addresses social and academic barriers by creating opportunities for shared learning, non-verbal support, and collaborative problem-solving, fostering a more equitable, supportive, and inspiring educational environment in Pakistani classrooms and beyond.
