SabzBin - Waste to Flame
A smart, compact biogas system for Pakistani homes with odor control, remote app management, and automated monitoring for clean energy and organic fertilizer production.

The SabzBin Digestor is a compact, modular, and digitally connected household biogas system designed to offer a practical, sustainable, and affordable energy alternative for Pakistani homes. It efficiently converts everyday kitchen waste into clean biogas for cooking and nutrient-rich fertilizer, reducing reliance on expensive and polluting fuels like wood, dung, and LPG. Designed with the local context in mind, SabzBin addresses key national challenges such as the energy crisis, environmental degradation, and the health impacts of indoor air pollution caused by traditional fuels. Its smart features include an intuitive mobile app that enables real-time remote monitoring of gas pressure, temperature, slurry levels, and feeding schedules. This makes the system accessible even to users with limited technical literacy, ensuring ease of use and efficient performance. The inclusion of automated mixing and odor control through carbon filters further enhances the user experience, making the system suitable for everyday household integration. With a compact footprint and low water usage, SabzBin is optimized for both rural and peri-urban homes, where space, resources, and access to clean energy are often limited.

SabzBin is the result of a rigorous, research-led design process grounded in primary fieldwork and secondary analysis. Surveys, interviews, empathy mapping, and on-ground field trials were conducted to deeply understand the behaviors, concerns, and needs of potential users. Complementing this, global case studies and insights into Pakistan’s energy and waste systems informed the technical viability and cultural adaptation of the design. At the heart of the system is anaerobic digestion, a proven method that breaks down organic matter in the absence of oxygen to produce methane-rich biogas and organic digestate. The design’s smart automation ensures consistent and optimized gas production, while its robust construction provides longevity and minimal maintenance in varied Pakistani environments. Unlike bulky or industrial biogas plants, SabzBin's modular setup makes it easy to install, relocate, and maintain. It is engineered to handle typical household organic waste output without requiring excessive water or complex handling, ensuring its practicality for everyday users. This makes it a game-changing product not just in terms of energy generation, but also in promoting better household waste management and agricultural enrichment through fertilizer use.

SabzBin is more than a product, it is a step toward community-level sustainability and self-reliance. By offering clean cooking fuel and high-quality fertilizer from kitchen waste, it reduces environmental pressure, lowers energy costs, and improves household health conditions. It directly supports multiple Sustainable Development Goals, such as SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) by providing an accessible fuel source; SDG 13 (Climate Action) by lowering greenhouse gas emissions; SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by reducing smoke-related illnesses; and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) by converting waste into valuable resources. With a target audience of 10–12 million low- to middle-income households, particularly those impacted by gas shortages and high LPG costs, SabzBin also presents scalable potential for small farms, schools, NGOs, and government clean energy initiatives. It provides an opportunity for decentralized energy solutions, fostering community empowerment and sustainable development at the grassroots level. SabzBin's relevance goes beyond individual homes, it becomes part of a larger movement toward clean energy independence, environmental stewardship, and social equity in Pakistan's evolving energy landscape.
